If you were planning to visit the Gulf of Mexico for a relaxing vacation this spring or summer, your plans may have been derailed by the oil spill that occurred last week. Hopefully you have international travel insurance to cover your losses.

The beaches of Florida make for ideal destinations for travelers from countries around the world. The temperatures at these locales are warm but not suffocatingly hot, the beaches are attractive, and the ocean water is typically crystal clear.

But because of this tragic oil spill, the vacation industry in the area is now as threatened as the local wildlife. No one is going to want a beach vacation at an area polluted by oil.

If you have international travel insurance, you may be able to cancel your trip and receive reimbursement on your airfare, hotel, and other associated travel expenses. Without it, you could be out hundreds or even thousands of dollars. This terrible event reminds us all that disaster can strike at any place at any time, so don't think of heading to your next vacation without the protection of international travel insurance.
