When you think of foreign exchange programs for students, what countries come to mind as popular destinations? The United States? Germany? Spain? France? While these are the nations we most typically associate with exchange programs, new trends are changing that. And that means that international student insurance is now a more important purchase than ever.
According to a recent article on CNN.com, today’s students are starting to look to new destinations for their exchange student adventure. Specifically, they are heading to developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Students feel like staying in these countries gives them a whole new cultural experience that is even more diverse and unique than what they might receive in one of the more traditional countries. Students are also able to take part in volunteer projects while studying in these developing nations.
However, while these countries certainly present new challenges, they can also present new dangers. Any time you are visiting a developing country, the chance for illness and even injury increases. Air and water quality vary in these countries, and communicable illness may be spread more easily. Infrastructure will likely not be as well developed, which can lead to accidents and injury.
If you do become ill or injured, you will want to be sure to have an international student insurance policy to help mitigate the high costs of healthcare. The last thing you want during your time studying is to generate a pricey medical bill. So if you are planning an exchange student trip to a developing country, be sure to study up on common potential problems and take the extra step of protecting yourself with insurance coverage.
