  • Mishaps in foreign tongue - Part 2

Ask anyone who has ever attempted to speak a foreign language knows, even after you have mastered the basics, the little things are still going to get you. Here are some for you to smile away. Travelling to foreign countries and some language follies have their own nostalgia.

Mishaps in Slovak:

The mix-up was with “šunka” and “sukoa”. What an American wanted to tell her host was that she liked eating chicken but not ham (šunka). Instead it turned out to be: “I eat chicken, but I don’t eat skirts (sukoa)”.

The next mix-up is of relationship (vz?ah) and elevator (vý?ah). So the American traveler instead of discussing with her neighbors on what was wrong with the elevator, she ended up discussing what was wrong with their “relationship”. I wonder who was more red faced, the neighbors or the traveler.

Mishaps in English:

Once a foreign tourist was waiting for a bus and remarked to the person standing next to him, “the city bus service is highly erotic”. Well did you guess what she actually wanted to say “the city bus service is highly erratic”?

Non-English speaking countries sometimes go out of their way to communicate
with their English-speaking tourists. A cocktail lounge in Norway had this advice for ladies: “Ladies are requested not to have children in the bar”. Quite a weird request considering which lady would want to deliver in a bar?

In India, Mumbai, one of the restaurants had this important information for their clients. “Open seven days a week, and weekends too”.

Did you know that David Beckham has insured his legs and Jennifer Lopez her butts, but you don’t forget to insure your smile.  :)
